El Deafo Extras: Don’t judge a book by its rejected covers! Plus Decatur Book Festival Stuff!

21 Aug

During the less-than-two-weeks-away countdown to El Deafo, I’ll be sharing some of the behind-the scenes stuff, like these covers that never saw the light of day:

Of course the final cover, which was art directed by Chad Beckerman and designed by Caitlin Keegan at Abrams Books, is definitely more striking and pulled together. I think Chad and Caitlin did a magnificent job.

Meanwhile, mark your calendars for El Deafo‘s first real appearance, and it’s a little bit earlier than the actual release date of September 2nd. I’ll be at the Decatur Book Festival the weekend of August 29th through 31st!

On Saturday, August 30th from 11:15-12:00, I’ll be doing a panel called Everybody’s Talking About It: Diversity in Children’s and YA Books with Andrew Smith, Carmen Agra Deedy, and Varian Johnson.

That same Saturday, from 1:45-2:15, I’ll also be doing a panel with Jimmy Gownley called This Really Happened: Graphic Memoirs for Kids.

There will be copies of El Deafo available, and I’ll sign ’em for you if you’re interested!

Lots of cool folks will be there, including:

Tom Angleberger

Mac Barnett

James Dean

Kimberly Dean
