RABBIT AND ROBOT: The Sleepover

This easy reader from Candlewick Press comes out in September of 2012!

What’s it about? Four things on a list of things to do, three pizza toppings, two friends, one crazy night!

Here’s a sneak peek…

It’s gonna be a fun one, I think!

Then, coming in Spring of 2013, from Clarion Books (a division of Harcourt Houghton Mifflin), we have…

BUG PATROL, a picture book by Denise Dowling Mortensen. It’s the first picture book I’ve illustrated that was written by somebody else.

What’s it about? Captain Bob is the bug policeman on patrol, reprimanding bugs of all sorts for various crimes and misdemeanors. Hopefully the illustrations will match up to Ms Mortensen’s very fine rhymes.

Here’s a sneak peek…

...not the greatest scan, but you get the idea. That's Bob!

And finally, CRANKEE DOODLETom Angleberger and I activated our Wonder Twin powers and came up with this book, also from Clarion Books. It comes out in Spring 2013, and asks the following question: What if Yankee Doodle really, really didn’t want to go to town? Sources say that I look just like the pony in the book:

As for Crankee himself, you’ll have to wait a bit to see what he looks like.

AND… I’ve got one other book project that I’m currently working on that might kill me. If it doesn’t kill me, it’s gonna be pretty good stuff!

You have some serious fans up here near DC. I think I have read “Jerry Bee” every night this week. They know the real title but it is as if they know him.:) We own every book you have ever written but one.

    • Cece Bell June 13, 2012 at 9:03 pm #

Wowza wow wow, what a nice note! Thank you so much, onesockon! Which is the one book you don’t have? Thanks again for writing.

Food friends… Are you all still in VA? Do you ever come up to do readings at school? If yes, I would love to coordinate something.

Happy book birthday tomorrow, Cece! (Or maybe it’s already today where you guys are). Can’t wait to read it!

    • Cece Bell September 11, 2012 at 9:31 am #

Thank you VERY much, Kirby! I’ll have a little something about it today. It was a surprise to me! Thought it wasn’t til the 25th that the book would come out. Crazy! Anyway, thanks so much for your kind words!

Bee Wigged is my very favorite children’s book of all time. I read it to my preschool class of busy bees at BUMP on the first and last day of school to remind them that the most important thing we learn is to bee kind. I love all of your books and can’t wait to read the new ones. You inspire me! Love and Laughter, Leslie

      • Cece Bell September 19, 2012 at 9:45 pm #

Thanks so much, Ms Leslie! I’m so glad that Bee-Wigged is still making the rounds at BUMP. Best to you!

Cece, I loved reading the article about you and Tom in the Roanoke Times today! I want to promote your book launch party with my library classes this week. Hope it’s OK to copy your invitation!? It’s so cute, and so much better than anything I’d put together. (I’d love to attend the party myself, but I’ve already committed to see Giovanni and Raschka at the Lyric that afternoon.) Looking forward to the new books!

    • Cece Bell September 25, 2012 at 2:27 am #

Yes, more than ok to copy the invitation! And rats! Giovanni and Raschka got to ya before I could! But they are amazing. I bet that will be a great show. Thanks so much for your support!

In Jackson Hole, WY, “Itty Bitty” has been one of our most popular readalouds for years. Any chance we’ll see more Itty Bitty books one of these days? The kids would gobble them up!

    • Cece Bell October 9, 2013 at 2:05 pm #

Wishing I could say yes to another Itty Bitty…but I DO have lots of new projects headed your way soon! You never know, though. That little dog could have lots of big adventures, for sure. Thanks so much for writing!

My 4 year old loves funny books about robots, so Rabbit and Robot was a big hit at bedtime for us! Thanks for such a funny book. We would love to see them in another adventure.

    • Cece Bell February 5, 2014 at 11:03 pm #

So glad your 4-year-old likes the book! He/she is probably in high school now, it’s taken me so long to get back to you. Perhaps another adventure will be available when said 4-year-old is actually in college! But I very much want there to be another one…

    Dear Cece,
My name is Starwarsfolder12. (Not really. It’s my WordPress name.)
El Deafo was a really good book. It relates to myself in many ways. I was born deaf, and I am in the middle of Mild and Severe. I can still hear, but faintly. So I have hearing aids as well. I hope you make a sequel to it. Maybe one related to bullying? I came up with this idea:

El Deafo 2: The Profounder Strikes!

When Cece is followed home by a mysterious man, she wonders if that man is… A SUPERVILLIAN! When the man moves in next door, Cece is worried! What if this man plans to make EVERYONE ON THE WORLD…deaf! Cece thinks it’ll be ok, since everyone will be like her…but then she realizes she doesn’t want that! Is this man a friend? Or is there more to him than meets the eye? Find out in El Deafo 2: The Profounder Strikes!

Ya like it? Maybe it could come in handy.

    • Cece Bell November 13, 2014 at 2:40 am #

Great to meet you, Starwarsfolder12! And that’s a great idea for a sequel. I hope YOU aren’t bullied about your hearing. I’ll tuck your idea away in an ideas file…you never know! Thanks so much for reading the book and for your note!

      • starwarsfolder12 November 13, 2014 at 7:06 pm #

You’re welcome! And tell Tom I say “Hi!”. I know him from a event in Toronto. As for the bullying, no, I am not!:)

  10. Beth Sardinha December 20, 2014 at 2:14 am #

I’m just writing to tell you how much my daughter LOVES ElDeafo. She loves books with thought and word bubbles and this is her favorite right now. She reads it over and over. Great book!

    • Cece Bell January 1, 2015 at 3:19 pm #

Thank you so much for writing, Beth! I am really pleased to hear that your daughter is enjoying the book so much. I hope your holidays were merry and bright. Have a great 2015!

We love Rabbit and Robot here at our school library! We want to know if there will be another Rabbit and Robot book coming out!
Thanks, 1st graders at Sacred Heart School, Bellevue, WA

  12. Delancey Stewart March 11, 2015 at 4:25 pm #

My children love Rabbit and Robot. They are constantly using robot voices to say things like “I have some data you may find interesting,” and “Observe your reflection.” They have been tormenting our librarian for the sequel, and don’t believe her when she tells them there isn’t one. Might they soon be proven right?

    • Cece Bell March 14, 2015 at 10:52 am #

There IS going to be another R&R!!! I’m working on it right now! So glad your kids enjoy the book…that’s awesome.

      • Luke April 2, 2015 at 12:28 am #

Yeah!! This is so exciting. We are big R&R Sleepover fans. Hopefully that means there will be some DC readings!

      • Cece Bell April 2, 2015 at 2:35 pm #

So glad you are fans of R & R! I’ll be in the NoVa/DC area very soon, actually…but not yet ready to talk about the second R & R…I’ll be posting about the upcoming trip soon! Thanks so much for your support!

  18. Maggie November 17, 2015 at 4:15 pm #

Dear Cece, my sons and I loved El Deafo, and we really loved the talk you gave in Pittsburgh! My son Jacob was so disappointed that we had to leave the book signing before he had a chance to meet you, as we were too far back in line. He wrote you a long letter afterward, and some of the highlights were: “I absolutely loved your book. It was funny and very heartfelt. I was eager to read more. You should totally write a sequel!!”

    • Cece Bell November 17, 2015 at 4:21 pm #

Aw, thanks so much for your nice note, Maggie! I’m disappointed that I didn’t have a chance to meet Jacob. What a kind letter! Please thank him for coming to my talk, and especially for reading the book. Much appreciated! All my best to you both!

  20. Suzanne Schultz April 19, 2016 at 2:20 am #

Hi Cece! I hope you see this message. I am a middle school special education teacher in the Bay Area of California. Every year our school has a competition called battle of the books. Students read a number of pre selected books and then choose one book, and use Animoto to make a “book trailer” film. The school then holds a screening of the films and the students vote for a viewers choice award and the English department votes on an overall winner. My classroom is made up of 14 students with many differing abilities and strengths. They made their video based on your book, El Deafo. They won the viewers choice award as well as the overall best in school award.
They now get to compete against other middle school students in the district competition. They are very big fans of you and your books. They would absolutely love if you happen to see this and watch their video. Thank you for being such an amazing inspiration!

OH MY GOSH!!! What an AMAZING piece of art created by your students. I LOVE IT! I can’t thank your students enough for the time they spent making this. Gracious, it’s amazing. The artwork, the animation, the narration–all so good. CONGRATULATIONS to one and all for winning the viewers choice award AND the overall best in school award. I hope they do well for the district, and I bet they will. Please thank your students for me, and tell them hi. Could I share this on twitter and/or on my website? All the best to you! xoxo! Cece

      • Suzanne Schultz April 19, 2016 at 2:31 pm #

WOW!!! Yes, yes of course! Please share anywhere you would like.
Please, let me know where you shared the video so I can show my students. They are going to be soooooo excited. I never even expected to hear back, let alone receive an email from you. They worked so hard on that video, and I am so, so, proud of them. Thank you for making books that they can relate to and inspire them to dream BIG. Not much in life comes easy for them too often, so this just adds to their special moment where their talents can shine!
Thank you again, SO MUCH, for your kind response.

        Suzanne Schultz

Dear Ms. Bell, My daughter and I have read your book, El Deafo, and both thoroughly have enjoyed. Your book is on the reading list for 2016-17 Battle of the Books. Thank you so much for letting us into your world, culture and personal experiences. It gave my daughter and I a new perspective on the Deaf community. Kindest regards, Gayle

    • Cece Bell May 24, 2016 at 2:03 pm #

Hi Gayle! Thank you so much for your kind note and for reading my book with your daughter. I’m so pleased you got so much out of El Deafo–that means a lot to me! Hope you have a wonderful summer. xoxo!

  22. Coco Funakoshi June 11, 2016 at 11:47 pm #

Hello Cece Bell! I am Coco Funakoshi and I live with my sister, dad, and mom in Los Angeles, California. My family immigrated from Japan, but they all can speak English too. My sister and I especially speak fluently in both languages. We both go to regular public schools on the weekdays and Japanese school on Saturdays.

I’ve read your Newbery Honor Book, El Deafo over and over! It’s my favorite book! I really like it because it is a true story and it shows how the characters feel. The pictures are also cute and it introduces me to your imagination of when you were little. I also read the description and it said that you liked Raina Telgemiers books! I love them too.

With that said, I wanted to share this book to the boys and girls in Japan, and I wanted to translate this book to Japanese. My sister and I can translate the English words to Japanese words (we’ll do the best we can to accurately reflect the story between the languages) and my dad can give it to the publisher at Japan. All of the words will be translated into Japanese accompanied by the cute pictures that you drew.

Thank you for your time, and I hope for a good response!
    Coco Funakoshi

    • Cece Bell June 15, 2016 at 11:59 am #

Hi Coco! Wow, what a cool note! I’m thrilled that you liked the book enough to want to translate it–that’s quite an honor. I will share your note with my publisher and see what they think.

Aren’t Raina’s books amazing? Just, wow!

I think you are so smart. Being able to speak and write in two languages is amazing. I’ll see what I find out from my publishers.

All my best to you and your sweet family! xoxox and thanks again for reading the book and for writing to me.

  23. Erica June 15, 2016 at 3:05 pm #

Hi Cece – I just finished reading “El Deafo” with a group of 5th graders and they loved it! They are wondering if there will be a sequel. They’d like to see what adventures Cece has in middle and high school.

    • Cece Bell June 17, 2016 at 12:01 pm #

Hi Erica! Thanks so much for your note. Well, there’s a sequel percolating around in my head…but I’m still not 100% sure if I’ll go for it or not. It would be quite an undertaking!!! THANK YOU for sharing my book with your class. I’m thrilled that they enjoyed it enough to ask about a sequel! Have a great summer!
